1744‐97 King of Prussia. Reigned 1786-97. Nephew of Frederick II (the Great). He interfered in the French Revolution and carried out the second and third partitions of Poland. He had a bright and open-minded personality, but was also obsessed with women, lacked political insight and consistency, and was unpopular for his anti-Enlightenment religious policies influenced by his favorites. However, he was supportive of the arts and sciences, and during his time Berlin developed into the central cultural city of Germany.
