He also wrote excellent meditative poems with philosophical undertones, such as the title poem of his collection of poems "Midnight Skating" published in 1968. He also wrote many critiques and edited collections of poems about British poets, and contributed in particular to the introduction of John Clare and the rediscovery of Thomas Hardy. In his later years he retired to Long Melford, north of Sudbury in Suffolk.
