… One of the most commonly cited and well-known examples of cross-dressing is that seen at carnivals. For example, Goethe, in his Italian Journey (more precisely, in the volume Second Stay in Rome), vividly describes the scene at the Roman Carnival in January 1788: “Young men, dressed in the finest attire worn by women of the lowest class, bare-chested, unashamed and proud, are usually the first to appear. They indulge in the affections of the men they meet…”
