A deciduous shrub of the legume family native to China, cultivated in gardens for ornamental purposes. It is 1-2 m tall, with glabrous branches and thorns at the nodes, and alternate leaves. The leaves are pinnately compound with 4 leaflets. The leaf axis has a needle-like protrusion at the tip, which remains even after the leaflets fall and gradually becomes lignified, forming thorns 1-1.5 cm long. The leaflets are obovate, the upper pair is larger than the lower one, 1-3 cm long, 5-10 mm wide, glabrous, and rounded or slightly concave at the tip. The stipules are attached to the base of the petiole, needle-like with a thick midrib, which later becomes lignified and turns into sharp thorns 5-10 mm long.
