...There are many mineral species that contain uranium, with about 140 species containing it as the main component. The main ore minerals that contain U ⁴⁺ include uraninite UO ₂ (pitchblende is a variety of this), coffinite U(SiO ₄ ) _{1－ x} (OH) _{4 x} , and brannerite(U,Ca,Th,Y)(Ti,Fe) ₂ O ₆ , which are generally black to dark brown in color and have a high specific gravity. Species containing U6 ⁺ include autunite Ca( _UO2 ) ₂ ( _PO4 ) ₂ · _10-12H2O , copper uranium oxide Cu( _UO2 ) ₂ ( _PO4 ) ₂ ·10-12H2O, uranophane Ca( _H3O ) ₂ ( _UO2 ) ₂ ( _SiO4 ) ₃ · _3H2O , and carnotite _K2 ( _UO2 ) ₂ ( _V2O8 ) _· _3H2O . Many of them are bright yellow or green in color and occur as microcrystals scattered in _the host rock, as coatings that cover cracks, or as replacements for plant fragments in sedimentary rocks.
