Uemura Shoko

Japanese painter. His real name was Shintaro. He was born in Kyoto. His mother was Uemura Shōen. He graduated from Kyoto Municipal School of Arts and Crafts and Kyoto Municipal Painting College. He studied under Nishiyama Suishō while still a student. He first exhibited at the Teiten and Bunten exhibitions, and after World War II at the Nitten exhibition. In 1948 (Showa 23), he participated in the formation of Sozo Bijutsu, and after working for the Shinseisaku Association, he helped found the Sogakai in 1974. In 1959, he went on a research trip to India and other countries. In 1967, he received the Japan Art Academy Prize, and in 1983 he became a Person of Cultural Merit, and in 1984 he was awarded the Order of Culture. He excelled in painting flowers and birds, and his unique and elegant expressions are considered valuable. His best known works include "Five Stars," "Oshidori," and "Juka Yukin." His eldest son, Atsushi (real name Atsushi), was also a Japanese painter, and the Shohaku Museum of Art (opened in 1994) in Nara City has donated works by three generations of the Uemura family: Shoen, Shoko, and Atsushi.

日本画家。本名信太郎。京都市に生まれる。母は上村松園。京都市立美術工芸学校、京都市立絵画専門学校を卒業。在学中から西山翠嶂(すいしょう)に師事する。初め帝展、文展、第二次世界大戦後は日展に出品していたが、1948年(昭和23)創造美術の結成に加わり、新制作協会を経て、74年の創画会創立に参画した。59年にインドなどに研究旅行。67年日本芸術院賞を受賞、83年文化功労者となり、84年文化勲章を受章。花鳥画を得意とし独特の清雅な表現が貴重とされる。『星五位(ほしごい)』『鴛鴦(おしどり)』『樹下幽禽(じゅかゆうきん)』などがよく知られている。長男淳之(あつし)(本名淳)も日本画家で、松園、松篁、淳之の上村家三代の作品を寄贈した松伯美術館(1994年開館)が奈良市内にある。
