Brandes, Georg Morris Cohen
Born: February 4, 1842 in Copenhagen
Died: February 19, 1927, Copenhagen Danish Jewish thinker and critic. He studied law at the University of Copenhagen, then switched to philosophy, becoming interested in Spinoza and Hegel. In 1871, he returned from a trip to Europe and became a lecturer at his alma mater, where he began giving lectures that were later compiled in Hovedstrømninger i det 19de Aarhundredes Litteratur (6 volumes, 1871-87). He also published the magazine The Nineteenth Century, promoted radical realism, and nurtured JP Jacobsen, Druckmann, Pontoppidan, and others. Abroad, he encouraged Ibsen, Björnsson, Strindberg, Lagerlöb, and others, and introduced Kierkegaard and Nietzsche to the world. His other works include Danske Digtere (Danish Poets) (77), Det moderne Gjennembruds Mænd (Modern Breakers) (83), and Sagnet om Jesus (The Legend of Jesus) (1925).

P.ヤコブセン,ドラックマン,ポントピダンらを育て,国外ではイプセン,ビョルンソン,ストリンドベリ,ラーゲルレーブらを励まし,またキルケゴール,ニーチェを世界に紹介した。ほかに『デンマークの詩人たち』 Danske Digtere (77) ,『近代の突破者たち』 Det moderne Gjennembruds Mænd (83) ,『イエス伝説』 Sagnet om Jesus (1925) など。
