1877‐1959 Jewish publisher. A German Jew from Posen (now Poznan, Poland), he established a chain of department stores throughout Germany. In 1931, he founded the Schocken Bookstore in Berlin, where he started his publishing and printing business, and focused on publishing Jewish-related publications around the time the Nazi persecution began. He later fled to Palestine and reopened his bookstore in New York, working to publish and promote the international publication of M. Buber, F. Kafka, and other works.
