The fifth president of the International Olympic Committee (1952-1972). American businessman. He distinguished himself as a pentathlon athlete while still a student, and placed fifth in the pentathlon at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics. After graduating from university, he became a wealthy man who made a success of his career in the construction industry. With his wealth as a backing, he devoted himself to promoting amateur sports, and demonstrated his influence as the head of many sports organizations. He was president of the United States Olympic Association from 1927 to 1945, president of the American Athletic Union (AAU) from 1928 to 1936, an IOC member in 1936, and president of the IOC in 1952. He participated in the 1936 Berlin Olympics as head of the US delegation, and directly protested Hitler's racism, such as the exclusion of black athletes, and many other anecdotes remain, including the outstanding performance of JC Owens and others. Even after he became president of the IOC, his beliefs about amateur sports did not change, and he fought to defend amateurism against the onslaught of commercialism, earning him the nickname "Mr. Amateur" for his unrealistic insistence on amateurism. His books include "The Future of the Olympics."
