... Composition refers to the process in which the composer repeatedly revise the music and fix it on the score as a work. The Renaissance theorist Johannes Tinctoris (c. 1435-1511) defined a fixed work as "resfacta" in relation to polyphony, and limited the term "componore" to this, distinguishing it from the improvised contrapuntal singing method of the time, "super librum cantare" (1477). In the sense that the final completion of the work is entrusted to the performer, the latter also includes Baroque basso continuo and 20th century aleatoric (uncertain) music. ...
