Two incidents occurred in the capital, Keijo (present-day Seoul), towards the end of the Joseon Dynasty (Yi Dynasty). (1) The Imo Coup: A rebellion triggered by military reforms by the Min government in 1882. Lacking a purpose, it invited military coercion from Japan and military intervention from the Qing Dynasty, and only strengthened the Min clan's government. (2) The Gapsin Coup: A coup d'état launched in 1884 by the Independence Party led by Kim Ok-gyun and others to overthrow the Sadae Party led by the Min clan. The Independence Party's coup failed due to a counterattack from the Qing Dynasty, and Kim Ok-gyun and others fled to Japan.
