Kunyozushiki - Konyozushiki

Japanese: 坤輿図識 - こんよずしき

The most outstanding world geography book from the end of the Edo period. Compiled by Mitsukuri Shogo, the adopted son of Western scholar Mitsukuri Genpo, based on several Dutch books, it was published in 1845 (Koka 2). It consisted of 5 volumes and 3 books. A supplementary edition was published in 1846-47, with 4 volumes and 4 books. It explains the geography of the six major continents of the world, and together with Mitsukuri's Shinsei Yochi Zenzu (1844), it was widely circulated from the end of the Edo period until the Meiji Restoration, making a major contribution to the enlightenment of people to world knowledge. It is also well known that Nabeshima Kanso and Ii Naosuke used this book as a diplomatic guide, and Yoshida Shoin was an avid reader. [Arisaka Takamichi]

幕末の最もすぐれた世界地理書。洋学者箕作阮甫の養子箕作省吾が，数種の蘭書を基にして編述，1845年(弘化2)刊。5巻3冊。46‐47年補編4巻4冊刊。世界六大州諸国の地誌万般を説き，彼の《新製輿地全図》(1844)とともに，幕末から明治維新に至るまで広く流布し，世人の世界知識の啓蒙に最も貢献した。鍋島閑叟や井伊直弼らが本書を外交指針とし，吉田松陰が愛読したことも著名。【有坂隆道】
