Swedish socialist activist and politician. After graduating from Uppsala University, he became a journalist, and in 1886 he became a reporter for the newspaper Socialdemokraten, and in 1888 he became its editor-in-chief. In 1889, he participated in the formation of the Swedish Social Democratic Workers' Party, and became a leader of the right wing within the party. In 1896, he became the first socialist member of the House of Representatives. In 1907, he became the first official party leader. He advocated reformist policies, and often allied with liberals on issues such as universal suffrage. From 1917 to 1918, he served as Minister of Finance in a coalition cabinet with the Liberal Union Party. From 1919 to 1920, he was a delegate to the Paris Peace Conference and chairman of the Second International. In March 1920, he became prime minister for the first time, but lost the election and resigned in October. From 1921 to 1923, he formed the second cabinet. In 1924, he formed the third cabinet, and resigned in January 1925 for health reasons, and died the following month. In 1921, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize together with Christian Lous Lange (1869-1938).
