It is a fundamental quantity that indicates the electrical properties of a material, i.e., the degree of polarization, and is also called dielectric polarizability or simply polarizability. In SI units, it refers to the χe in the equation relating dielectric polarization P and electric field E , P = ε 0 χ e E (ε 0 is the dielectric constant of a vacuum). In isotropic materials, it is a scalar quantity, and is usually a constant when the electric field is small, but in anisotropic materials, the directions of P and E do not coincide, so it becomes a tensor quantity. It is sometimes written as P = χ e E. The units of χe are dimensionless in the former and F/m (F is farad), the same as ε 0 , in the latter.
