French violinist. Also known as Francescatti. Born in Marseille. He began studying under his father, who was a disciple of Paganini, at the age of three, and showed precocious talent. He studied under Thibaud in Paris and became acquainted with M. Ravel. He made his debut in Paris in 1925, and traveled around Europe and the US, increasing his fame. After World War II, he settled in New York, where he performed with pianist Casadesus and others. Known for his clear tone and refined style, he left behind some excellent performances of Romantic concertos and modern French works.

フランスのバイオリン奏者。フランチェスカッティともいう。マルセイユ生れ。パガニーニの孫弟子にあたる父に３歳から学び，早熟な才能を発揮。パリでティボーに師事し，M.ラベルの知遇を得る。1925年パリにデビューし，欧米各地に楽旅して名声を高めた。第２次世界大戦後はニューヨークに居を定め，ピアノ奏者カザドシュなどと共演。澄んだ音色と洗練されたスタイルで知られ，ロマン派の協奏曲やフランス近代の作品に名演を残している。
