Français - France (English spelling) Jean Françaix

French composer and pianist. Born in Le Mans. Studied composition under N. Boulanger and piano under I. Philippe at the Paris Conservatory. Graduated at the top of his class in 1930 at the age of 18. Influenced by Poulenc, Ravel, Stravinsky, and others, he established a simple, well-balanced style of composition that was witty, refined, and elegant, based on the traditions of classical French music. His works include theatrical music such as the operas La cripple (1937), Madame de Cleves (1965), ballets The Emperor's New Clothes (1935), and The Misfortunes of Sophie (1935), orchestral music such as Piano Concerto (1936), numerous chamber music such as Wind Quintet (1948), the oratorio The Apocalypse of St. John (1939), and vocal music, piano music, and film music, covering a wide range of genres. His film music includes The Lady (1965). He also enjoyed success as an accomplished pianist throughout Europe and the United States.
