Xenophon (English spelling)
[Born] Around 430 BC, Athens
Died around 355 BCE. A Greek soldier and historian from Corinth. A disciple of Socrates. He joined the Greek mercenary army in the Persian civil war, and when the army lost its commander, he was chosen as the leader and led a Greek army of 10,000 men to retreat from the desert near Babylon to the southern shore of the Black Sea. His achievements are detailed in his Anabasis. He later sided with Sparta and was exiled from his homeland, living in the countryside near Olympia, before being chased again and moving to Corinth. His other major works include Hellenica, Apologiā Sōkratūs, Apomnēmoneumata, Symposion, Oikonomikos, and Kȳrūpaideiā. His style is considered to be the model for classical Greek prose.
