The Renaissance was a time of many contradictions in how to deal with insanity. On the one hand, persecution of witches was intensified, but on the other hand, asylums for the insane began to be established in Spain and elsewhere. The physician Johannes Weyer (1515-88) appeared in his work The Devil's Illusions (1563), which protested that "since most possessed people and witches are mentally ill, they should be left in the hands of physicians, not priests," sounding a loud bang on the side of medicine. This reform would later be called the "First Psychiatric Revolution" (G. Gilboeg), and it was this "revolution" that gave rise to the term "mental illness." ...
