Atsuhara Honan - Atsuhara Honan

Japanese:
Atsuhara Honan - Atsuhara Honan
This was an incident of oppression committed against Nichiren's disciples in Atsuhara, Fuji County, Suruga Province (present-day Atsura, Fuji City, Shizuoka Prefecture) in 1279. At the time, Nichiren's disciple Nikko spread the Lotus Sutra throughout Suruga Province, and the monks Nisshu and Nichiben of the Tendai sect Ryusenji Temple (present-day Ryusenji Temple) in Atsuhara were also disciples of Nikko. Hirachi, the head priest of Ryusenji Temple, was not happy with this and filed a complaint with the Kamakura Shogunate alleging that Nisshu had engaged in karitarouzeki (harvesting and stealing crops from other people's fields) with the peasants of Atsuhara. Nisshu and his comrades claimed that this was unfounded and instead sued Gyōchi, but three of the peasants who were escorted to Kamakura were beheaded. Nichiren did not see this incident as a local incident, but as oppression of all Nichiren sect followers, and called for unity among his disciples and disciples. Nisshu and Niben escaped to Nichiren's house in Minobu, Kai Province (present Minobu Town, Yamanashi Prefecture) and escaped the disaster. →Kuonji Temple
