A general term for songs found in the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki. There are about 200 songs, excluding duplicates. They are the oldest form of Japanese songs from the Manyo period and earlier. In the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki, many of the songs are linked to stories and tales, but they were probably originally songs that were passed down independently with some kind of origin and were incorporated into the stories by the compilers of the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki. They sing cheerfully and simply about all aspects of ancient people's lives, including love, battle, hunting, and rituals. They were written by the people together, rather than by individuals, and have the character of a collective song. Many of them are in the form of short poems, tanka, sentou-ka, and choka, but they show a stage before they were fixed into a fixed form. They are noted as the origin of Japanese literature, and because they are written in Manyo-gana, each character being a separate sound, they are also valuable in Japanese language research for learning about ancient phonology, grammar, and words. → Related topics Koto song score | Waka Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
