…French historian. Graduated from the Ecole Normale Supérieure. In 1891 he became a professor at the University of Bordeaux, and in 1905 he became a professor at the Collège de France, where he taught courses on ancient Gaul and became a central figure in the field of history. In 1924 he was elected a member of the Académie Française. He looked up to Fustel de Coulanges as his teacher and inherited his strict positivist methodology, but at the same time he inherited Michelet's rich imagination, and although he was in the same league as lecture hall historiography, he stood out for his sharp critical eye and rich sensitivity. …
