A general term for marine fish of the genus Scorpaena in the family Scorpaenidae of the order Scorpaeniformes, or it refers to one of these species. The name is derived from the presence of a tuft-like cortical projection above the eye. The English name for the family Scorpaenidae is scorpion fish or rock fish, based on the fish's spines and color. There are seven species and three subspecies in the Scorpaena genus that inhabit the waters off Japan. The Scorpaena neglecta neglecta (illustration) is found in various coastal areas along the Pacific coast from Chiba Prefecture westward, along the Sea of Japan coast from Niigata Prefecture westward, as well as on the Korean Peninsula and Taiwan, where it lives in slightly deep rocky areas.
