Vlad the Impaler

Prince of Wallachia. Reigned 1448, 1456-62, and 1476. In Romanian history, he is known as a brave general who defeated the Ottoman Empire, but in the West he is better known as the model for B. Stoker's novel Dracula (1897). Son of Vlad Dracul, Prince of Wallachia. At the time, Wallachia was a region where Islamic and Christian forces clashed, and he himself spent his childhood in Turkey as a hostage. During his long second reign, he curbed the tyranny of the great nobles and restricted the privileges of German merchants in Transylvania, strengthening central power.

ワラキア公。在位1448,1456‐62,1476年。ルーマニア史ではオスマン帝国の軍隊を退けた勇将として有名だが，欧米ではむしろB.ストーカーの小説《吸血鬼ドラキュラ》(1897)のモデルとして知られている。ワラキア公ブラド･ドラクルの子。当時ワラキアはイスラム，キリスト教両勢力が衝突した地域で，彼も少年時代を人質としてトルコで過ごした。長くつづいた2度目の統治期に，彼は大貴族の横暴を抑え，トランシルバニアのドイツ人商人の特権をも制限して，中央権力の強化を図った。
