A walled city in the province of Prato in Tuscany, central-west Italy. It is located about 13 km northwest of Florence, on the west bank of the Bisenzio River. It flourished as an autonomous city in the 11th century, and the woolen industry developed, earning it the nickname "Italian Manchester." In addition to textiles, machinery, cement and other industries are also carried out. In the city center, there is the Piazza delle Comune, surrounded by old buildings. To the northeast, the cathedral (12th-13th century) contains precious frescoes by Fra Filippo Lippi. The Basilica of Santa Maria delle Carceri (15th century) is said to be one of the masterpieces of Renaissance architecture in the Tuscany region.
