An ancient city in southeastern Asia Minor. Nusaybin, Turkey. Around the 2nd century BCE, it was the residence of Armenian kings. Located at the point where the mountain road in Asia Minor leads into northern Syria, it has long been a strategic and commercial point, and a key transportation point between the East and West. It was the site of frequent fierce battles between the Roman and Parthian empires. It later became a religious center for the Nestorians and Jacobites, and was occupied by the Sassanid Persians in the 5th century and by the Arabs in 640. During the caliphate period, it became a fortress, but fell into decline due to the Mongol invasion in the 13th century and internal unrest.
