Lake Te Anau (English spelling)

Japanese: テ･アナウ[湖]（英語表記）Lake Te Anau

Located in the southwest of New Zealand's South Island, this is the second largest lake in the country and the largest on the South Island. It has an area of 344 km2, an elevation of 209m above sea level, and a depth of 276m. It is the most representative glacial lake in the Fiordland region, and is connected to Lake Manapuri to the south by the Waiau River, and functions as a reservoir for hydroelectric power generation at Lake Manapuri. There is a limestone cave nearby, which has become a tourist destination. A bird thought to be extinct, the Notornis (takahe), was discovered nearby in 1948. [Taniuchi Tatsu]
