Formerly known as Broken Hill. Located in central Zambia, it is the country's oldest mining city and the capital of Central Province. It is located about 90 km north of Lusaka, at an altitude of 1,180 m. It is rich in mineral resources, especially lead, zinc, and vanadium. The deposits were discovered in 1903, and development is underway. It is a key point for rail transport. The surrounding area is an agricultural region, mainly producing tobacco and corn, and is also a distribution center for these crops. In 21, fossils of a Rhodesian man were discovered nearby. There is a domestic airport. Population: 166,519 (estimated 1990).
