Hungarian-born American anthropologist. In 1919, he became the first professor of anthropology at the University of Budapest. He became interested in S. Freud's analysis of civilization, and after studying Ferenczy's educational analysis, he pursued research into anthropology from a psychoanalytic perspective. He defected to the United States in 1938 and became a naturalized citizen in 1944. Through his research into Australian Aborigines, American Indians, and others, he verified psychoanalytic theory and studied topics such as culture and personality, the relationship between psychopathological phenomena and primitive cultures, and the unconscious motivations behind customs and beliefs.

ハンガリー生れのアメリカの人類学者。1919年ブダペスト大学の人類学の初代教授となる。S.フロイトの文明分析に興味をもち，フェレンツィの教育分析を受け，精神分析の立場から人類学の研究を進めた。38年アメリカに亡命し，44年に帰化した。オーストラリアのアボリジニー，アメリカ･インディアンなどの調査を通して，精神分析理論を検証し，文化とパーソナリティ，精神病理現象と未開文化の関連性，風俗や信仰の背後の無意識的動機などを研究した。
