Tamagaki

Japanese: 玉垣 - たまがき
Tamagaki
〘Noun〙 ("Tama" is a complimentary term. In the past it was "tamakaki") 1. A fence that surrounds a shrine or the Imperial Palace. Igaki (sacred fence) . Mizugaki (divine fence) . *Kojiki (712), volume 2 , folk song "The Tamakaki sacred fence built in the Mimoro is so great that no one will rely on it, the god's palace attendants." *Yonezawa Honshasekishu (1283), volume 1 "It is shaped like four layers of ten thousand threads, and is layered with jagaki, mizugaki, and aragaki." 2. A metal belt wrapped around the edge of the bowl of a helmet . Waist . 3. The name of a crest. A stylized version of 1. [Etymology] (1) A square wooden fence with a crosspiece is called "Kaku Tamagaki", and one made of thick planks is called "Itata Tamagaki". These are considered the formal style, as opposed to "Kuroki Tamagaki", which uses the bark of the tree as is without scraping it. Other styles include stone Tamagaki and vermilion-painted " Akeno Tamagaki". Ise Grand Shrine has four layers of fences, which are called "Mizugaki", " Uchi Tamagaki" , "Soto Tamagaki", and "Itata Tamagaki" from the inside.
(2) It is not found in the "Manyoshu", and in the "Hachidaishu" there are only two examples of "ake no tamagaki" and one of "mitsu no tamagaki". As the "Waka Shogakusho" says, "Name: Akeno tamagaki, tamagaki, mizu no tamagaki (already a sacred fence)", it often refers to the fence of a shrine, and is often written about in poems with pine trees and white cotton .
