[Etymology] (1) A square wooden fence with a crosspiece is called "Kaku Tamagaki", and one made of thick planks is called "Itata Tamagaki". These are considered the formal style, as opposed to "Kuroki Tamagaki", which uses the bark of the tree as is without scraping it. Other styles include stone Tamagaki and vermilion-painted " Akeno Tamagaki". Ise Grand Shrine has four layers of fences, which are called "Mizugaki", " Uchi Tamagaki" , "Soto Tamagaki", and "Itata Tamagaki" from the inside.
(2) It is not found in the "Manyoshu", and in the "Hachidaishu" there are only two examples of "ake no tamagaki" and one of "mitsu no tamagaki". (2)「万葉集」には詠まれておらず、八代集でも「あけの玉がき」が二例、「みつの玉がき」が一例あるのみである。「和歌初学抄」に「物名〈略〉垣あけのたまがきたまがきみづのたまがき（已上神垣也）」とあるように、神社の垣をいうことが多く、松や白木綿(しらゆう)を配して歌に詠むことも多い。
