The capital of Saint Lucia, a Windward Island in the eastern Caribbean. Population: 2,301 (1998), 4,173 (2010 census). Urban area population: 55,000 (1993). Located in the northwest of Saint Lucia, it is a natural harbor at the back of a bay that extends into the interior of the island. It is one of the best ports in the West Indies and is a popular port for cruise ships. Founded by the French in 1650, it was an important coaling port in the 19th and 20th centuries until the British came to use oil as a power source for ships. It has suffered several major fires and has few old buildings. In particular, a fire in 1948 destroyed a large part of the city. The city was rebuilt after the fire and is now the commercial center of Saint Lucia.
