'Imād al‐Din

A writer and official from the Ayyubid period. Born in Isfahan, he studied in Baghdad and Mosul, where his talent for poetry was recognized and he served in the caliph's court, but later moved to Syria under the Zengid dynasty and was appointed secretary to Nur al-Din. After his death, he became secretary to Salah al-Din and accompanied him on campaigns around the country, compiling his experiences there in the seven volumes of The Syrian Lightning. He is renowned for his accurate descriptions of facts, and is also known as one of the leading writers of his time. [Sato Tsugitaka]

アイユーブ朝時代の文人，官僚。イスファハーンに生まれ，バグダード，モースルに遊学，詩才を認められてカリフの宮廷に仕えたが，のちザンギー朝治下のシリアに移ってヌール･アッディーンの秘書官に任用された。その死後はサラーフ･アッディーンの秘書となって各地の遠征に従軍し，この時の体験を《シリアの稲妻》7巻にまとめた。事実の正確な記述に定評があり，また当代一流の文章家としても知られる。【佐藤次高】
