A covering attached to windows and entrances for the purpose of shading or privacy. Usually refers to Venetian blinds. Venetian blinds are made by connecting several thin, horizontally long, narrow boards of metal or plastic with strings so that they overlap at intervals slightly narrower than the width of the boards and are hung from above. The angle of the boards can be changed to adjust the amount of light, and when not in use, the boards are tightly stacked and pulled up to the top of the window. Other types include vertical blinds, which are made by lining up vertically long, narrow strips of cloth and connecting them with strings to hang from above, and roll blinds, which are a single piece of cloth that is hung from above and can be rolled up and down. ◇ Meaning "blind, blind".
