The composition of the Innoshi changed considerably, but based on the Nishinomiya-ki, Shukai-sho, Myomoku-sho and other records, there were roughly twenty types of Innoshi during the Heian and Kamakura periods. They can be classified according to their nature and function as follows: (1) those who oversaw all matters within the palace, such as betto, judge-dai and shuseki-dai, (2) those who served the retired emperor and handled miscellaneous matters related to his personal life, such as tenjonin, kurodo and hikurando, (3) those who were in charge of various duties, such as the bechinou-sho (deposit office), tomono-sho (cleaning office), kamon-sho (cleaning office), yakuden (medicine office), shisho (office), shoji-sho (office for the preparation of gifts), gofuku-sho (workshop), mizushi-sho (office for the preparation of presents), gosaya (stall), fudono (literary office), and (4) those who were responsible for the personal life of the retired emperor and the security of the palace, such as gozuishin-sho (attached office), musha-sho (armed office), hokumen (northern room), saimen (western room). First, (1) was the core of the inji, and there were many cases where only (1) or (1) and (2) were called inji. *Some of the terminology that refers to "Impermanent Stable" is listed below.
