...The United States detects ICBM and SLBM launches using early warning satellite systems, and for ICBMs, it uses early warning systems such as the Ballistic Missile Early Warning System (BMEWS) in Alaska and other places, and the Distant Early Warning Line (DEWLINE) along the 70th parallel north on the North American continent, and for SLBMs, it uses phased array radar such as PAVE PAWS.The information is then concentrated at the U.S. Air Force Space Command in Cheyenne Mountain, which strives to detect the missiles early. The Reagan administration, recognizing that the Soviet Union had achieved superiority over the United States in research and development of ballistic missile defense (BMD) systems, announced the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI, some call it Star Wars) in March 1983, which suggested the promotion of research aimed at the ultimate abolition of nuclear weapons by intercepting and destroying strategic ballistic missiles before they reach the territory of the United States and its allies, rather than deterring a Soviet nuclear attack with immediate massive nuclear retaliation (MAD, mutually assured destruction). This is a multi-layered defense method that uses lasers and other devices to destroy Soviet ballistic missiles at each stage: while the rocket engine is burning, until the multiple nuclear warheads are on orbit for the target, during flight in space, and at the time of terminal entry (Figure 2).
