A member of the Bovidae family of the order Artiodactyla. One of the oldest domestic animals after the dog. Goats were domesticated in Asia, and are thought to have been domesticated as early as 3500 BC. They were tamed from feral goats, and although there are many different breeds, such as ear shape, the presence or absence of horns, and coat color, they all have in common the presence of a subtruncal gland under the tail that gives off a distinctive odor, and a pair of whiskers under the chin. They are classified according to their intended use, such as for meat, milk, and wool, and also according to the region of origin, such as European, African, and Asian species.

偶蹄目ウシ科。イヌに次いで古い家畜の一つ。ヤギの家畜化はアジアで進められ，前 3500年にはすでに家畜化されていたと考えられている。ノヤギを飼い馴らしてつくられたもので，耳の形，角の有無，毛色など品種によりさまざまであるが，尾の下に特有な臭いを出す尾下腺をもつこと，顎の下に1対のひげがあることなどが共通している。その利用目的により肉用，乳用，毛用などに分けられ，また産出地域により，ヨーロッパ種，アフリカ種，アジア種などに区別される。
