Freiligrath (Hermann Ferdinand Freiligrath)

Freiligrath (Hermann Ferdinand Freiligrath)

German poet. Born into a poor family in Detmold, he started writing poetry halfway through his studies while working in a shop. Influenced by English and French Romanticism, he published works such as "Ride of the Lion" (1835), which were full of unique colors and exoticism, and breathed fresh air into the poetry world of the time. In 1844, he became a political poet with his collection of poems "Confessions of Faith", which caused a stir, and he continued to publish many striking political poems, such as in Marx's "Neue Rheinische Zeitung". His representative works include "From the Dead to the Living" (1848) and "Farewell Address to the Neue Rheinische Zeitung" (1849), which are included in "Anthology of Modern Political and Social Poems" (1849-51). He spent most of his later years in exile in London, but as he became estranged from the political world, it seems that his fountain of poetry gradually dried up.
