A hot spring in Tokiwayumotocho, Iwaki City, Fukushima Prefecture. Salt spring, 58°C. Long known as Sahako no Yu, it was the only post station on the Iwaki Kaido road with a hot spring during the Edo period. This hot spring is considered non-volcanic, and springs out from the granite rocks under the Tokiwa coalfield along a fault line. In the mid-Meiji period, it gushed forth from over 50 sources. After successful eruptions from drilling, excessive digging was carried out, and the amount of water flowing out decreased. As the development of the Tokiwa coalfield progressed, the nearby coal mines flooded one after another, lowering the hot spring surface. After the end of the Taisho period, it became impossible to pump the water, and many inns went out of business. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
