A large-scale high pressure system that appears in the subtropical high pressure belt of the Northern Hemisphere and has its center near the Azores Islands. It is most developed in summer and covers a wide area of the North Atlantic Ocean, centered around 35° north latitude. In winter, it becomes weaker and its range narrows, and it is distributed in a band along about 30° north latitude in the Atlantic Ocean. Westerly winds prevail in the north of this high pressure belt, and easterly winds prevail in the south. The location and rise and fall of this high pressure system, along with the Icelandic low, are closely related to changes in the weather in the Northern Hemisphere. In winter, the Icelandic low prevails and covers Europe, but in the Mediterranean region, which is sandwiched between the Icelandic low and the Azores high located at 30° north latitude, a front develops and becomes a passage for low pressure, causing heavy rainfall. On the other hand, in summer, the Mediterranean region is under the influence of the dominant Azores high, so the weather is sunny and extremely dry.
