Born: November 9, 1874 in Okayama [Died] April 3, 1941. Western-style painter in Kyoto. He first studied oil painting under Matsubara Sangoro, then entered Koyama Shotaro's art school, Fudosha. He became an art teacher at a secondary school for a time, but in 1900 he traveled to Europe and studied under J. Laurens at the Académie Julian in Paris, returning to Japan in 1904. While opening an art school in Kyoto, he assisted Nakazawa Iwata, Asai Tadashi and others in establishing the Kansai Art Academy. He traveled to Europe again from 1906 to 1908, and studied under Laurens again. After returning to Japan, he became the director of the Kansai Art Academy, and was active mainly in official exhibitions, such as judging the Bunten and Teiten exhibitions. He consistently introduced art from European academies, and in 1932 he received the Légion d'honneur from France. His major works include "Western Woman" (1904, Kyoto Institute of Technology) and "New Madame" (2009, Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art).
