…In the 1910s, he broke new ground in church murals, mosaics, and stage decorations. After leaving Russia in 1918 and wandering around Europe, he embarked on a major expedition from 1924 to 1928 with his wife Elena and his eldest son, Yurii Nikolaevich Rerikh (1902-60), a Tibetan scholar, through the Karakoram Mountains, the Tarim Basin, Altai, Mongolia, the Tibetan Plateau, and finally Sikkim. He published a travelogue, Altai-Himalaya (1929), and Yurii's book, Journey to Inner Asia (1931). …
