Price leadership

When there is an oligopolistic market structure, and among a group of mutually substitutable products, the power to determine the prices of products is in the hands of a specific company, and other companies tend to follow suit, price formation is said to be based on price leadership. In this case, the company that takes the lead is called the price leader, and the companies that follow it are called price followers. This type of price formation is often observed when the market structure has the following characteristics:

寡占的な市場構造があり，相互に代替性の高い商品のグループ間で，商品の価格決定権が特定の企業の手にあって，他の企業はこれに追随するという行動がみられるとき，プライス･リーダーシップによる価格形成がなされているという。このときリーダーシップをとる企業は価格先導者(プライス･リーダー)，これに追随する企業は価格追随者(プライス･フォロワー)と呼ばれている。このような形での価格形成は，市場の構造が次のような特徴をもつとき，しばしば観察される。
