Folk Theatre

Japanese: 民衆演劇 - みんしゅうえんげき

Theater for the people. There is no clear concept established in theater history or theater studies. Theater for the people has existed since ancient times in both the East and the West, but this concept was particularly put on the table in Europe from the 19th century onwards, especially in France and Germany. The concept can be said to be popular theater that is politically somewhat reformist and artistically somewhat avant-garde. In other words, it considers what truly popular and folk theater is in modern society. For example, theater in a socialist country cannot necessarily be called people's theater, and as E. Ionesco said, experimental theater does not necessarily become people's theater.

民衆のための演劇。演劇史上また演劇学上，必ずしも明確な概念が確立されているわけではない。洋の東西を問わず古くから民衆のための演劇は存在したが，この概念がとりたてて俎上にのせられるようになったのは，19世紀以降のヨーロッパ，とりわけフランスとドイツにおいてである。その概念は，政治的にはどちらかといえば改革的で，芸術的にはやや前衛的といえるような，大衆的な演劇であるといってよい。つまり，そこでは近代的な社会における真に大衆的で民衆的な演劇とは何かということが考えられており，たとえば社会主義国の演劇が必ずしも民衆演劇とはいえないし，あるいはE.イヨネスコがいうように，実験演劇が民衆演劇にならぬともかぎらぬのである。
