…Starting out uneducated, Goodyear devoted himself to improving the quality defects of natural rubber, and in 1839, accidentally discovered the hardening of rubber when he left a mixture of raw rubber, sulfur, and white lead next to a stove, laying the technical foundation for the rubber industry that would later become the industry. Thomas Hancock (1786-1865), a British rubber factory owner, improved on this technology, named it "vulcanisation", and obtained a British patent in 1843. Goodyear's vulcanisation method was patented in the United States the following year, but he spent the latter half of his life fighting lawsuits over the patent, and died in poverty without profiting from his invention. …
