River fishing - Kawaryo

Japanese: 川漁 - かわりょう

It is also written as kawarai. It is a type of inland fishery. It is difficult to do it on a large scale, and therefore it has retained its old-fashioned fishing methods. Currently, there are almost no full-time fishermen along the banks of rivers throughout Japan, and most are part-time fishermen or recreational fishermen, but until recently there were nomadic fishermen who engaged in river fishing, known as pon, oge, and mitsukuri. There are many different fishing methods used in river fishing. First, tsukamidori is a method of catching fish that are hiding under stones, in holes in the bank, or in stone walls or rocks, by grabbing them with your hands or hitting them with a stone or a sword in the water.

川猟とも書く。内水面漁業の一種。大規模に行うことが困難で，かえって古風な漁法を残している。現在，日本各地の河川の沿岸では専業者はほとんどなく，多くは兼業者か遊漁者であるが，近年までポン，オゲ，ミツクリなどと呼ぶ，川漁を行う漂泊生業者がいた。　川漁で用いられる漁法は多岐にわたっている。まず，摑捕（つかみどり）は石の下，岸の虚（うつろ），石垣･岩の穴などに潜む魚を手づかみしたり，水中の石やげんのうでたたいて捕らえたりするものである。
