1661‐82 The third Tsar of the Romanov dynasty of Russia. Reigned from 1676 to 1682. In Russian history, he is usually called Tsar Fyodor without the "III" part. He was the eldest son of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich. During his reign, he implemented policies such as strengthening tax collection by introducing a household tax (1679), reforming the military system, and abolishing the "family system" of government posts (1682), which prioritized family background over talent or achievement. He also fought against Turkey after Turkey's invasion of Ukraine (1676-81), and gained control of Ukraine on the left bank of the Dnieper River.
