The phenomenon in which light from stars and the Sun is lost due to absorption by the Earth's atmosphere. The brightness of a star varies depending on the wavelength of light, the weather conditions at the time of observation, the zenith distance, etc. To correct for this, the apparent brightness is measured for each wavelength at various zenith distances to obtain the correct luminosity and spectrum.
