In ancient times, funeral expenses were paid when a person of rank died. Detailed regulations were laid out in the funeral ordinances. When a Kyoto official, provincial governor, or other official was killed, the amount paid was based on the rank of the official, from first rank to first rank. A first rank official was given 30 pieces of silk, 120 pieces of cloth, and 10 strands of iron, while a first rank official was only given 1 piece of silk and 4 pieces of cloth, showing a significant disparity in status. Those of third rank or higher in the san'i category were given two-thirds of the amount paid by official officials, and those of fourth and fifth ranks were given half that amount. The Taika's Simple Funeral Order, which appears in the March entry for the second year of the Taika era (646) in the Nihon Shoki, contains regulations regarding funeral implements, but makes no mention of personal items.
