1871‐1911
A Romanian-born thief king who took the world by storm. His real name was Georgu Mercadant Manolescu. As an elegant thief and conman at the end of the century, he made 20 million marks (approximately 10 billion yen in current Japanese currency). He was introduced to the Belle Époque Paris high society as a Romanian aristocrat, seducing ladies and stealing jewels from their necks and arms. He later went to America and fell into poverty, becoming a gambler who cheated cards and played against Gold Rush nouveau riche, but he fell in the freezing cold of Canada, broke his golden right arm and retired from the criminal business.

一世を風靡（ふうび）したルーマニア生れの泥棒王。本名はマノレスクGeorgu Mercadant Manolescu。世紀末の優雅な泥棒詐欺師として2000万マルク(現行邦貨約100億円)の稼ぎを上げた。ベル･エポックのパリ社交界にルーマニア貴族のふれ込みで押し出し，貴婦人たちを色仕掛けでくどきながらその首や腕から宝石を失敬した。のちにアメリカに渡って零落，いかさまカードでゴールドラッシュの成金相手の賭博師となるが，酷寒のカナダで転倒，黄金の右腕を骨折して犯罪稼業から引退した。
