1871‐1911 A Romanian-born thief king who took the world by storm. His real name was Georgu Mercadant Manolescu. As an elegant thief and conman at the end of the century, he made 20 million marks (approximately 10 billion yen in current Japanese currency). He was introduced to the Belle Époque Paris high society as a Romanian aristocrat, seducing ladies and stealing jewels from their necks and arms. He later went to America and fell into poverty, becoming a gambler who cheated cards and played against Gold Rush nouveau riche, but he fell in the freezing cold of Canada, broke his golden right arm and retired from the criminal business.
