The capital of Ubon Province in southeastern Thailand. It is located on the left bank of the Mun River, a tributary of the Mekong, in the eastern part of the Khorat Plateau. It has a population of 106,602, while the population of the province of the same name was 1,691,441 (as of 2000). The eastern part of Ubon Province borders Laos across the Mekong River, and the southern part borders Cambodia across the Dong Lek Mountains. In the past, Ubon Province developed as a commercial center, with active exchanges with Laos via the Mekong River. It is connected to the capital Bangkok by rail, and is also a key hub for automobile traffic. Rice is cultivated in the lowlands, which have good water resources, and glutinous rice, the staple food, is produced there.
