American sculptor. Born in Philadelphia. Graduated from Stevens Institute of Technology. After working as an engineer, he studied at the Art Students League. In 1926 he moved to Paris, where he was influenced by Mondrian's abstract paintings and exhibited his wire sculptures at the Humorists exhibition in 1927. In 1932 he attempted his first mobile, becoming a pioneer of kinetic art.
